Berk Armağan, who continued to work on the glass he made to give as a gift to a friend, and that he started to sell them on social media, said that he went abroad for different projects with the power of social media and told his story and his works.
Armağan stated that the idea of drawing a picture in a glass came to his mind after a gift he made to a friend before, “I used to make the first glasses as gifts for my friends. Once you begin to tour Turkey was born in me a curiosity outside the country. The idea came to sell the glasses I painted on to make money. I prepared 12 glasses and went to Taksim-Şişhane metro. I did this to sell glasses and I was successful. Then I opened social media accounts. So I spread the incident to a wider audience. We have come until today. I sold cups, worked with brands and in this way I traveled to 25 countries and 50 cities ”.
Saying that he tries to create an aesthetic image by drawing on different objects, Armağan said, “I drew on masks, gloves, hand sanitizer bottles, eggshells and similar objects. I can draw on any surface. I built the wall visible in the background during the pandemic period. I am a curious person. The cup is my main story, but I am not afraid of trying new things. I am discovering myself. I did not receive painting training on this subject. “I both discover myself by trying new things, and I add beauty to people by sharing the beautiful things I have created with people.”
Stating that social media played a big role in her selling her works and visiting the countries and cities she targeted, Armağan said, “Social media has a great importance. Because if used correctly, a very wide audience is addressed there. When I went abroad with the income I earned by sharing the glasses I made in an aesthetically pleasing manner and when these people were interesting, I reached a larger audience. The large crowd that came in also provided me more income. So I was able to sell more glasses and travel. I received sponsorships from aircraft companies and similar travel companies, ”he said, adding that when his target audience grew, he started working with brands.
Drawing attention to the fact that art will develop more in social media, Berk Armağan continued his words as follows: “Artists are currently in a difficult situation. But right now, brands also need content to post online. Because everything is spinning in the virtual world right now, rather than the physical. Therefore, a better market is created for artists. I think that artists who use social media properly and have good communication will earn more money than the previous period. “
Noting that artists approach a subject from a different perspective that is not seen by everyone, Lecturer at Istanbul Kültür University Cartoon and Animation Department. See. Özlem Malatyalıoğlu said, “When we start to evaluate this work about what art is and its necessity, when we think of working on objects, art is a way of expressing it. Artists approach a subject from a different perspective that is different from what everyone else does. Therefore, it would be really successful to use any object for its purpose because he wants to convey his idea, emotion and thought. Of course, if we evaluate it in this context, we can also enter into conceptual art. So what the content is can be much more important. “At that point, it is suitable for the object to be different, for the artist to express himself and deliver the message he wants to convey,” he said.
Stating that there has been a rapid transition to digitalization with the pandemic, Malatyalıoğlu said, “The primary issue is to develop a different perspective. It is also a culture to be able to process science and art in a versatile way and to create products. In this context, the foundations of this culture are also laid at the university. The digital environment has been beneficial in terms of young people producing work very quickly. It was also beneficial in terms of getting feedback. We know that they act by showing each other their work, communicating more quickly. Social media has become an area where they can create a portfolio rather than an environment where they can share their work. ”He stated that social media also provides opportunities such as reaching companies and artists on the other side of the world, and being able to come together and work with different artists.
Malatyalıoğlu underlined that there are still aspects that are open to development as well as the advantages of digital platforms, “Information is very quickly accessed in the digital environment. During the pandemic, many artists saw that they started posting their works on social media, such as portfolio pages. This time too many options started to emerge. Considering the possibilities brought by technology, it has become an affordable, accessible art and design environment. Therefore, what is important at this point is whether much more qualified works will emerge from this diversity. “Social media has become a good platform for young people to express themselves and put forward a business in a universal way.”
Stating that students and artist candidates should leave the program learning part, improve themselves and set a goal, Malatyalıoğlu continued: “Now, in this new media, everything is very accessible. So, what I can recommend to students, artist candidates, is to share their work. Let them be open minded and get feedback. There are also environments where one-to-one job applications can be made. In addition, it is necessary to ask “What can be done by bringing together different branches of art and science?” For this, it is very important to be open to different cultures, experiences and opinions, to follow technology closely and to follow the works of different art branches. “
