Thousands of years of history in Mersin: Alahan Monastery

It is estimated to have been built in Mersin in 440-442 AD. Alahan MonasteryIt houses two churches, one of which was destroyed, monks’ chambers carved into the rocks, and a baptistery.

The monastery, also known as the “Hagia Sophia of Mersin” due to its architecture and decorations similar to the Hagia Sophia-i Kebir Mosque-i Şerifi, is also known as one of the pilgrimage routes of this religion, as it is also important as the passageway of Christianity.
