In the Nazilli district of Aydın, with the cooperation of Adnan Menderes University and the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, the works initiated 4 months ago in the ancient city of Mastaura, resembled the Colosseum (amphitheater) in Rome. Due to the Coliseum removed by cleaning day full round face that was reported to be as unique in Turkey.
A similar to the Colosseum, which is regarded as the best example of Roman architecture in the world, has emerged in the 1800-year-old Mastaura Ancient City in Aydın’s Nazilli district.
The discovery of the Coliseum, which was learned to have been preserved under the ground between olive and fig groves, created excitement in the world of archeology. It is estimated that various sports were performed during the period when Mastaura Antik was used as an arena in the Colosseum located in itself.
Aydın Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism Umut Tuncer, Nazilli Mayor of Good Party Kürşat Engin Özcan, Aydın Museum Director Abdurbari Yıldız and Head of Mastaura Ancient City Excavation Aydın Adnan and Menderes University Archeology Department Dr. Sedat Akkurnaz, faculty member, made investigations in the field and gave information to journalists.
Aydın Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism Umut Tuncer said, “We discovered an arena of the Mastaura Ancient City. It is one of the uniquely and solidly standing structures in Anatolia. It is the only building in the eastern wing of Greece in the Roman period and in this respect, it is a unique structure. We compare it to the colosseum in Rome. There will be a more intense work in the spring and we will reveal this structure in a short time. Definite dating work continues for this place, but an estimated 1800 years we think structure. This is a sports field and arena. We have theaters in other ancient cities, but they are in the shape of a half moon. The reason why this structure is unique is that it is completely round. You can bring the colosseum in Rome to your mind. Yuvaklar tells that unlike building theaters, sports competitions are held. Presumably, we think that various sports games were held here, such as wild animal or gladiator fights, “he said.

Nazilli Mayor Kürşat Engin Özcan said, “There has not been much work done on this place in the past and today. There were not too many resources. We determined that a very large field and very serious work should be done. This is one of the things we can do for Nazilli.”
