Khan Palace in Sheki city, which is famous for its historical and natural beauties, is one of the most visited works by tourists.
Sheki Khan Palace, which is among the important works of Azerbaijani medieval architecture and was included in the World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO in 2019, as a place where nature and history are intertwined, fascinates those who see it.
Built as a summer residence in 1762 by Muhammed Hüseyin Han Müştag, grandson of Hacı Çelebi Han, the founder of the Sheki Khanate, the palace is surrounded by walls. Behind the walls lie mountains covered with forest.
The walls of the halls and rooms of the palace, which consists of two floors, six rooms and two mirrored balconies, are decorated with colorful embroidery, motifs and murals reflecting war scenes.
Geometric patterned palace windows, made by mounting glass of various colors between wooden slats, are among the rarest examples of handicrafts called “network”.
Each square meter of the grids in the windows consists of 5,000 interlocking laths and pieces of glass. The war and hunting depictions in the rooms add a different beauty to the space. One of the important features of the palace is that no nails or any adhesive material were used in its construction.
There is a pool in the garden called “Khan Bağı” in front of the palace. On both sides of the pool are two plane trees, one of which is 34 meters high and the other 42 meters high, which is older than the palace, erected in 1530 and called “Khan Plane” by the public. Drone footage reveals the beauty of the Khan Palace and its surroundings more clearly.
The favorite place of local tourists who took the opportunity of the 9-day Nevruz holiday in the country was Sheki. Sheki Khan Palace is also flooded by tourists from Baku and other provinces.
Tourists, who get information from the guides about the history and architecture of the palace, enjoy being in a place intertwined with history and nature, where they take plenty of pictures.
One of the tourists visiting the palace, Behruz Halikov, said in a statement that Azerbaijan has many historical and cultural monuments, and one of the regions with the most monuments is Sheki.
Stating that he visited Sheki Khan Palace with his children, Halikov said, “I wanted my children to feel our history and claim it in the future. I am coming here for the second time. Although it is a small building, the Sheki Khan Palace is a very interesting and fascinating building. Everyone should see this place.”
Yalçın Halilov said, “Sheki Khan Palace is an important monument for us. I visited this place with my family to learn our history, remember it again and learn more deeply.”
Ali Samedov, who said that he was from Baku and came to Sheki for the first time, said, “I have heard the praise of Sheki a lot. I felt like I was in history in the Khan Palace. It is a very magnificent building. It is proud that we have such a historical monument.”
