In Gaziantep, where the air temperature reaches 45 degrees, the temperature drops to 10 degrees in the 500-year-old Kaleoğlu Cave. Some of the customers who are cold in the cave, which is operated as a cafe, try to warm up with blankets, while others warm up with an electric stove.
Kaleoğlu Cave in Şekeroğlu Mahallesi, where food and ammunition were stored during the defense of Gaziantep, is described as a “natural air conditioner” with its cool air in summer and warm weather in winter.
After the effect of the summer season, thermometers started to show 45 degrees in Gaziantep. With the increase in temperature, citizens began to flock to the 500-year-old historical Kaleoğlu Cave, which is operated as a cafe.
While it is almost scorching hot outside, the approximately 500-year-old cave in the Historical Yeni Han, with its 10-15 degrees Celsius, attracts the attention of tourists, including those coming from abroad.
While the temperature drops to 10 degrees in the historical cave, customers who are cold try to warm up with electric stoves and blankets.
Elif Gündüz, who came to Gaziantep from Kocaeli with her friends and stated that they were cold due to the coldness of the cave and covered themselves with blankets, said, “We came from Kocaeli to visit Gaziantep. We were very curious. The weather of Antep was extremely hot for us. I would have fainted. My blood pressure dropped. Then my friend told me about the caves. We visited almost all the caves. We especially liked this place. “We’re officially cold here,” he said.
Expressing that they stopped in the cave the previous time they came, Gündüz continued his words as follows: “Now we have just arrived in the cave. We froze and got out of here. This is interesting, in the 45 degree heat outside, this place is preserved like this and everyone’s focus is right here. Of course, I think it’s a local feature. We always want to come to this cave when we’re out. Let’s go. It’s an interesting and beautiful place, so we liked it. We took our fleece right now because we were cold. So you come to such a place from 45 degrees heat. The thing between the two of them “It makes you think. You’re also cold.”
Mehmet Kaleoğlu, the manager of the cave, stated that although the temperature is close to 44 degrees outside, the inside of the cave is 10-15 degrees, “This cave is 15 degrees when it is 45 degrees outside compared to other places. When it’s 0 degrees outside, the cave is still 15 degrees. People come and say ‘we are cold’. We light the stoves or give polar fleece,” he said.
Stating that the weather has been very hot for 2-3 days and there is a density in the cave, Kaleoğlu said, “People are happy when they sit down. They like it very much when they find a cool environment as soon as they come from the heat. Then they look at it and they feel cold. They say that we have not seen anything like this yet. Tourists are very pleased. “This is a 500-year-old cave, and an inn was built from here,” he said.
